The Chicago International Film Festival turned 56 this year and is exploring new ways to bring cinema to people's doorsteps. One of the longest running film festivals has faced challenges with the current pandemic, but is pivoting by offering most of the films at home.
Founded in 1964, the popular film festival continues in the tradition of launching movies early to eager audiences. From October 14 through 25, many will be seen virtually with a few films shown at the ChiTown Movies Drive-In, 2343 S. Throop St.
The Out-Look series has been a success for the festival in the past and continues with the LGBTQ+ programming currently planned for this year.
Shown exclusively at the drive-in on Saturday, Oct. 17 is Francis Lee's Ammonite, the follow-up to the captivating God's Own Country that he wrote and directed. This time out, Kate Winslet and Saoirse Ronan have an affair to remember and Winslet is slated to take home the festival's Career Achievement Award.
For Chicago audiences, Mama Gloria is a must see thanks to a touching story set in Illinois. The documentary about a classy, transgender woman growing old with grace and dignity is simply not to be missed.
France makes big waves at the festival this year with the gay romance Summer of '85 and the documentary Little Girl about a darling seven year old living her authentic life.
