AMK Kitchen Bar had me at "howdy." Upon walking up, the store front was simple and understated with a welcoming open air concept complete with rolled up garage door. If you are looking for fresh air sit right up in the front.
The kitchen itself is open concept showing they have nothing to hide. The skilled bartender is on hand right beside it shaking those muscles. One original cocktail that is a must try is the Slow Poke Rodriguez containing El Milagro tequila, cucumbers, and grapefruit, que rico! There are over 60 beers to pick from also so no one should go home thirsty.
The Mac N Cheese can be a starter, a side, or even a complete meal. The creamy goodness will fill up the tank as it is covered in delicious jalapeno bacon crust.
For main dishes the AMK Classic hamburger with satisfy with a double patty, horseradish dijonnaise, and fried pickles. Yes, fried pickles, this chef is from the South and knows how to make comfort food.
The Nashville Hot Chicken Biscuit is a mouthful and quite spicy. Sandwiched in between a cheddar biscuit this massive piece of chicken is worth crossing the road for. The thin fries served on the side with buttermilk ranch were quite tasty.
For dessert the cookie dough and ice cream bowl was just the right amount to finish me off.
The friendly staff mentioned the brunch on the weekends is hopping with chicken and waffles plus bloody Mary's and mimosas. Sounds like something to return for.
American Modern Kitchen shows that restaurants with a strong but simple menu, modern decor, and a helpful staff is all you need to be a success.
Head over to 1954 W. Armitage for a yummy dinner spot that matches the laid back neighborhood. For Open Table reservations visit amkchicago.com or call 773-276-4400.
AMK satisfied the Nunn's southern soul!
