I've been in a relationship for 5 years. I'm not sure I'm (we're) happy, but I fear hurting my partner's feelings. I also worry about being alone. How do you know when it's time to go?
Is it Time?
That is always a tough one. As human beings we flock to the familiar and what is comfortable, sometimes it seems easier to just keep the status quot than to shake things up. You said your not sure if your happy? If you closed your eyes and envisioned a life of total bliss what would it look like? Is what is missing something that is a non-negotiable? Is it something you that you could reach out to your partner with? 5 years is a long time to brush away but you don't want to spend another 5 years coasting along in a relationship that is not fulfilling. Picture yourself in another 5 years, is he in the picture? If not, as painful as it is, you should move on for both of your sakes. It will never be easy but it will get better. You don't want to pass up the right guy because you are afraid of being alone. Alone does not have to mean lonely.
