The Decline and Fall of the Case Against Same-Sex Marriage Dr. Andrew Koppelman North Shore Unitarian Church 2100 Half Day Road Deerfield, Il, 60015 847-234-2460 Negative empirical claims about same-sex couples, such as the notion that gay people cannot sustain lasting relationships, have been refuted. In response, contemporary arguments against same-sex marriage deftly avoid making any empirical claims at all. Prof. Koppelman will examine these arguments and show the costs of this growing insulation from reality. Andrew Koppelman, Professor of Law and Political Science at Northwestern University, teaches courses in constitutional law; enforcement of morals; 1st and 14th amendments; and religion and the law. His widely published works include “Same Sex, Different States: When Same-Sex Marriages Cross State Lines;” “On Affirmative Action and Truly Individualized Consideration;” “You Can’t Hurry Love: Why Antidiscrimination Protections for Gay People Should Have Religious Exemptions;” as well as numerous other articles such as The Fluidity of Neutrality and Does Obscenity Cause Moral Harm? With an AB from the University of Chicago and an MA, JD, and PhD from Yale University, Dr. Koppelman taught at Princeton University and the University of Texas before joining Northwestern’s faculty in 1997.
