SALLY! gives us a glimpse into the work and the woman who spearheaded the 1970s and 80s lesbian feminist movement. Best known for her role alongside Harvey Milk in helping defeat the Briggs Initiative (aka Prop 6)–a 1978 state bill which would have banned gays and lesbians from teaching in California public schools–Sally Gearhart was a force to be reckoned with. Filmmaker Deborah Craig presents an intimate portrait of Gearhart, a complicated and sometimes alienating powerhouse, her complexities, and the larger symbiotic relationship between spokeswomen like Gearhart and movements for social change.
