Reeling: The Chicago LGBTQ+ International Film Festival presents One In A Thousand.
Directed by Clarisa Navas
Cast: Ana Carolina Garcia, Sofia Cabrera
In the northern Argentine social housing neighborhood known as “One Thousand,” seventeen-year-old Iris wanders the “estate” day and night during the long summer heat, trying to stave off boredom by shooting hoops, hanging out with other teens in the project and fending off the unwanted advances of the horny boys. She’s aware that her sexually experienced gay cousins Dario and Ale are sleeping with many of the boys on the down low but it’s not until she meets the “older,” mysterious Renta, a 20 year-old with a tough past, that Iris feels the stirring of her own sexual awakening. Though wagging tongues immediately whisper about the budding romance – nothing is secret for long in this tight-knit, insular world – the suddenly emboldened Iris has the youthful bravado to push back at the gossip. Now if she can only overcome her fears and insecurities to give the romance a chance, Iris will truly experience the rapture of first love. Navas’ film beautifully captures a tender love story set in a hostile environment, flourishing in spite of it.
Available to stream in the U.S. only.
