Girls 4 Science's 6th Annual Women's History Month Reception
In celebration of Chicago’s female business community and its leaders during Women’s History Month, Girls 4 Science will host the 6th Annual Women’s History Month Reception and Award Ceremony. Taking place on Thursday, March 15 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at The Little Black Pearl, 1060 E. 47th Street in Chicago, the event will feature guest speaker Mae C. Whiteside, President/CEO of CKL Engineers, and honor Dr. Amy Wilson, Senior Corporate Attorney at Astellas US LLC. All proceeds from the event will benefit Girls 4 Science which is a nationally recognized non-profit organization that is dedicated to exposing girls in the Chicagoland area to quality science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) programs. Tickets are $45 per person and can be purchased in advance on the Girls 4 Science website or at the door. Funds will support Girls 4 Science initiatives including weekly STEM sessions, field trips, science camps and more hosted throughout the Chicagoland area. She is a trained civil engineer and is licensed in the State of Illinois. As President/CEO, Ms. Whiteside develops and maintains client relationships for the firm and directs all engineering and planning projects acquired by the organization. Ms. Whiteside is an alumna of Illinois Institute of Technology with a Bachelor’s of Science in Civil Engineering. She is a member of American Society of Civil Engineers, Women in Energy and American Council of Engineering Companies. CKL Engineers, LLC is one of the winners of the 2018 Engineering Excellence Honor Award for its role in the overhaul of the Jane Addams Memorial Tollway between Chicago and Rockford. Today, Mae’s new role is Construction Manager for the upcoming Pullman Clock Tower and Administration Building Renovation Project. Ms. Whiteside resides in Chicago, IL with her son Kody. About Amy Wilson, Ph.D. Amy Wilson received a Bachelor of Science degree (1988) and a Ph.D. in molecular biology (1994) from the University of Kentucky. Dr. Wilson was a post-doctoral fellow at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center and then went on to work as a scientist at Synaptic Pharmaceuticals in New Jersey. Dr. Wilson is now Senior Corporate Attorney, IP for Astellas US LLC in Northbrook, IL. Dr. Wilson has published several scientific and legal articles and is an inventor on several patents. She is a passionate advocate for STEM education programs, as her love of science has driven her education and career choices throughout her life and has led to many opportunities. She has volunteered for Girls 4 Science since 2010 and is currently serving as Board Chair for Girls 4 Science. About Girls 4 Science Established in 2009 by Executive Director Jackie Lomax, Girls 4 Science is a nonprofit organization dedicated to exposing girls in Chicago ages 10-18 years old to opportunities in STEM. Its mission is to focus on developing skills, self-esteem, awareness as well as relationship building that will help girls overcome barriers that may prevent them from achieving greater success in STEM careers. It is Chicago's only all-girls science initiative to provide certified instructors in a state-of-the-art laboratory. Free hands-on enrichment programs are offered during six-week Saturday Science Academies at two of Chicago's City Colleges and St. Francis University in Joliet, in addition to field trips, mentorships and scholarships to 12th graders.
