Freak Show
Celebrate the outsider in all of us with this delightful comedy starring rising talent Alex Lawther (the young Alan Turing in THE IMITATION GAME) and a cast that includes the legendary Bette Midler, Abigail Breslin (LITTLE MISS SUNSHINE), Laverne Cox (ORANGE IS THE NEW BLACK), AnnaSophia Robb (THE CARRIE DIARIES, BRIDGE TO TERABITHIA), and Ian Nelson (THE HUNGER GAMES). Even with a transfer to an ultra-conservative high school, while his beloved Muv (Middler) is in rehab, there’s no way the ultra-fabulous Billy Bloom (Lawler) is going to lower his freak flag to half-mast for long. Having grown up in Muv’s intoxicating world of “grace, glamour, and Gucci,” his calling as a self-professed “trans-visionary gender obliviator” is daily displayed in an ever-increasing array of stunning sartorial creations that Lady Gaga would envy. Billy finds allies in a chatterbox he dubs Blah Blah Blah (Robb) and the surprisingly sensitive jock Flip (Nelson), but he’s ignored his stern father’s warning that “the nail that sticks out gets hammered down” and a brutal beating by the school bullies lands Billy in the hospital. That only makes him more determined to be true to his outrageous self and running for prom queen against the school’s arch mean girl, Lynette (Breslin), becomes his first priority. Rising talent Alex Lawther gives an “impassioned and beautifully non-binary performance” as Billy, superstar Bette Midler—no surprise—delights as Muv, while Laverne Cox offers warm support as a TV reporter firmly in Billy’s corner. Actor and producer Trudie Styler makes her directorial debut with this charming coming of age tale that’s as witty and as fearless as its young protagonist.
