THAT’S NOT US is an intimate portrait of three twenty-something New York couples as they travel to a beach house to enjoy the last days of summer. But the fun and carefree weekend, soaked in the sunshine of the last days of the season, becomes an exploration of what it takes to sustain a healthy relationship and make love last in what is now being called the “gayest generation.” Through each of the three couples – one gay, one lesbian, and one straight – this diverting, moving and downright sensual dramedy – explores sex and relationships with a fresh perspective, finding that while sexuality and gender may vary, the struggles to keep love alive do not. Sullivan’s attractive, experienced cast dug deep into their characters and then, working from a brief outline, improvised the bulk of the dialogue, building the scenes organically. The result is a refreshing and insightful variation on the typical romantic comedy that is also surprisingly thought-provoking.
