Degenerate Art Gallery Presents: Headshots

"Headshots" is a collection of portraits by openly gay visual artist Julius DC Bautista that explore duality from multiple angles and perspectives. From fantasies of astronomical proportions to heavily lurking notions of impending demise, what originates in reality is slowly engulfed by the surreal. By removing most contextual elements beyond a subject's head, the resulting narratives are cryptically encoded in a language of facial expression and the visual manifestation of emotions and thoughts. The Illustrative and exaggerated manner in which these visual works are rendered serve to reflect the fluidity of abstract concepts and complex emotions that cannot be articulated easily in words. ARTIST BIO: Julius DC Bautista is a United States Marine Corps veteran and diagnosed Borderline, whose works are influenced by social sciences, existentialist philosophy, the psychology of dreams, and his experiences with what the DSM-5 classifies as an emotional intensity disorder. Balance, harmony, and paradox play significant roles within Bautista's works, which are rendered as moments that are open to interpretation, channeling the ambiguity of a fading memory or dream. Comedy and drama are intertwined to simultaneously reinforce and negate one another, drawing out questions pertaining to purpose and perspective. Bautista's pointed portraits act as controlled translations of emotional extremes in which relativity is dependent upon a viewer's own experiences and imagination. Influences range from the obscure to the obvious, and from all directions, including pop culture, rock music, Japanese animation, classical theatre, and independent films, to create a dreamlike scenario for which independent interpretation may thrive.
