Drunktown's Finest
Sydney Freeland (US, 2014, 95 min) Set in Gallup, New Mexico, dubbed “drunktown” by the media, DRUNKTOWN’S FINEST is a contemplative character study of Nizhoni, a Navajo girl who was adopted by a white family and desperately wants to know the culture from which she came; Sickboy, a father-to-be hoping to enter the armed forces to support his child but unable to avoid his self-destructive impulses; and Felixia, a transgender girl who is lovingly supported by her grandparents but whose source of income is casual prostitution. Felixia’s story is especially touching: her grandfather is a medicine man who reminds her that the “third gender” is revered in the Navajo tradition, and that she is a valuable asset to the community, knowledge that keeps her going despite painful experiences with those her own age. This critically acclaimed Sundance hit went on to win the award for Best U.S. Dramatic Feature Film at Outfest. Sponsored by Queer Film Society
