Of Girls and Horses (Von Mädchen und Pferden)
Monika Treut (Germany, 2014, 82 min) This thoughtful coming-of-age tale from veteran German director Monika Treut (GENDERNAUTS: A JOURNEY THROUGH SHIFTING) focuses on Alex, a high school dropout and misfit whose mother throws her into an internship at a stables as a last-ditch attempt to straighten her out. There Alex meets Nina, a riding instructor who treats her with a mixture of discipline and respect, giving Alex space to flourish and grow to love horses. Meanwhile, Nina is having her own problems with a long-term relationship in the city that she is avoiding but unwilling to terminate. Kathy, a wealthy girl, arrives to spend the holidays riding her own horse and commands the bulk of Nina’s attention, much to Alex’s dismay. Surprisingly, Alex and Kathy overcome their class differences and form a tentative friendship, which escalates during a drunken weekend when Nina decides to go to the city to visit her partner, Christine.
