Hong Khaou (UK, 2014, 86 min) In this touching meditation on love, language, and cultural isolation, Richard (Ben Whishaw, SKYFALL, CLOUD ATLAS) is grieving the untimely loss of Kai, his lover of four years. Before Kai died, he had wanted to come out to Junn, his Cambodian mother, whom he had placed in a nursing home, but he never got the chance. Junn speaks no English and feels very isolated, though she has a sweet romance with a British gentleman who doesn’t seem to mind the language barrier. Worrying for her well-being, Richard hires a translator and tentatively tries to forge a relationship between them without being able to explain who he is, or why he wants to help her.
