Eytan Fox (Israel, 2013, 92 min) In this delightful parody of the Eurovision song contest, a group of friends and neighbors in Tel Aviv watching “Universong” are disappointed by the lackluster Israeli entry. They spontaneously record their own song on a mobile phone to cheer up Anat, who is frustrated by her marriage, and unbeknownst to the rest of the group, Ofer, a flamboyant gay man, submits their number to the Israeli judges. They wind up becoming the official Israeli entry, much to the chagrin of Yael, who has a tense job working for the prime minister, and Ofer’s closeted boyfriend, who worries his parents will discover their relationship and throw him out. In spite of that, the group travels to Paris for the contest and fantastic music ensues, with an irresistible soundtrack by Babydaddy from the Scissor Sisters. This heartwarming, hilarious musical is stylish and lovely from start to finish, and a must-see for anyone who has laughed at Eurovision’s wild, patriotic insanity.
