Josh Beck (US, 2014, 97 min) Ever is struggling to cope with the death of her boyfriend, but life seems meaningless and she drifts from her job at the bookstore to her still-unpacked home. Feeling especially despondent one evening, she goes up on a rooftop, contemplating suicide, when a photographer, Emily, stops her and keeps her company for the evening. They strike up a sweet, tender friendship, and Ever discovers at a party that Emily is gay. Their friendship seems to be going somewhere more, and Ever seems to finally be recovering from the depression that plagued her since the accident. But when Emily oversteps her bounds, Ever’s trust is tested and she wonders if she made the right decision, letting Emily so far into her fragile life. Showing with Short: PLATONIC SOLID (Melinda Stephan, US, 2013, 19 min) Park and Madison, two would-be lovers, redefine the term “soul mate” in this modern story of love, loss, coming out, and coming of age.
