I Got Somethin' to Tell You
Comedy pioneer Moms Mabley, often referred to as “the funniest woman in the world,” comes to life again, complete with rolling laughter and measured eloquence, in Whoopi Goldberg’s directorial debut. This astute documentary showcases Mabley’s talent and pays homage to a woman whose relevance still resonates today. Mabley was a role model for Goldberg, who pays tribute to her comedic mentor and is joined by other comedians, including Bill Cosby, Kathy Griffin and Eddie Murphy. Through archival footage and interviews with these comic legends and others, Goldberg crafts a complex portrait of this woman whose hilarious routines helped break down social, political and gender stereotypes. The film includes a peek into Mabley’s lesbian lifestyle and uncovers other little known details from this beloved performer’s life. Reeling’s presentation at the DuSable Museum will include a specially taped message from Whoopi Goldberg.
