Corpus Christi
The Religious Right’s reactions to the “gay Jesus play” coming to their town is chronicled in this documentary about a touring production of Terrence McNally’s controversial play “Corpus Christ,” which retells the story of Christ from a gay perspective. As the acting troupe tours the play (sections of which are interspersed into the film) across the country and internationally, they face censorship, protests, bomb threats and religious condemnation. Mirroring current changes in society in regard to freedom of speech, civil rights, gay marriage and separation of church and state, this production has become a vehicle for a community struggling to find its voice. Discussing their own feelings about McNally’s transformative work and its effect on the audiences that they encounter along the way – both pro and con – the company of actors find themselves on a journey that will forever change their lives – and perhaps that of their audiences.
