Reaching for the Moon
This sumptuous English-language 1950s period piece recounts the mid-life years of Pulitzer Prize winning poet Elizabeth Bishop (played by an elegantly graceful Miranda Otto of The Lord of the Rings trilogy) when she left America to live and write in Rio de Janeiro. There, the flinty, controlled Bishop fell in love with the well-off, deeply sensual Lota de Macedo Soares (butched up to the hilt by the beautifully handsome Brazilian TV star Gloria Pires). Initial hostilities between the pair make way for a complicated, yet long-lasting love affair that dramatically alters Bishop’s relationship to the world around her and forever marks Soares. But military intrigues in Bishop’s adopted country, along with her quietly growing alcoholism, push the love affair into tragic territory. From renowned Brazilian director Bruno Barreto (Dona Flor and Her Two Husbands), and set against the backdrop of history, Reaching for the Moon is an intimate snapshot of the search for inspiration and enduring love. Queerty.com has dubbed Reaching for the Moon, “One of the biggest lesbian films of the year.” Winner – Audience Award for Best Feature at Outfest.
