Lienhard labels his movie a “docu-tale” – a hybrid of documentary and fiction. But it is hard to categorize this fascinating story that delves into the lives of a fantastic duo. Ladies and gentlemen, give it up for 33-year-old Moroccan-German Mourad and his 48-year-old Dutch mentor Antoine – better known as Cybersissy and BayBjane. Antoine, academic, artist, musician, gender visionary, and diagnosed schizophrenic has, like Leigh Bowery before him, elevated the art of drag with a capital “D.” Antoine’s discovery of the diminutive Mourad has blossomed into a friendship based on respect and a mutual fascination with gender bending performance art. At just 149cm tall, Mourad is the smallest drag queen in the world. He’s also multiple-disabled, has spent half his life in hospitals, has different long legs, no regular toes, no regular fingers, and just one eye (the other he changes into a bionic-eye!). Encouraged by Antoine, Mourad experiments with his disabilities and can be found on stage at nightclubs from Ibiza to New York City in his fantastic get ups, cavorting with nightlife denizens and club legends like transgender artist Amanda Lepore. In between glimpses of these fabulous, over the top parties and the recitation of their fascinating lives, Cypersissy and BayBjane are seen in mythic fashion and art inspired tableaus inspired by the experimental films of Kenneth Anger and Matthew Barney. Gorgeously shot and scored, these mini-vignettes underscore the deep creativity of this one-of-a-kind duo that has captivated their corner of the world.
