Last Summer
Luke and Jonah have known each other since they were four years old. Though they were quite different – Luke is charismatic and athletic while Jonah is shy, sensitive and artistic – they became friends, and their friendship eventually blossomed into romance. Luke taught Jonah how to play baseball; Jonah did Luke's homework for him. Last Summer observes their quiet final days together, as Jonah prepares to leave his small Southern town for bigger and better things, and Luke comes to terms with himself, his lack of ambition, and being alone. Thiedeman’s graceful, contemplative debut feature, gorgeously shot and scored to a slightly out of tune piano, positions the love story of the two teens against the familiar sights and sounds of small town America. The film casts an unforgettable spell on audiences and has drawn favorable comparisons to the masterful films of Terrence Malick.
