Free to Love (LIBRES PARA AMAR)
Free to Love chronicles an important chapter in the history of the LGBT movement in Puerto Rico. In 2008, a group of Puerto Rican LGBT activists came together to organize a grass roots initiative against CR 99, a constitutional marriage amendment measure backed by the religious right. By building a public relations campaign on this statement, activists were able to gain support outside the LGBT community and in the process demonstrated that a unified community can make a difference when it comes to stopping human rights violations. As a side story, the documentary uncovers what can happen when the separation of church and state is breached by legislators and by the religious right; when keeping a legislative seat is more important than benefitting all constituents.
