Continental
The director of Small Town Gay Bar and Bear Nation is back with a new documentary that focuses on the notorious Continental Baths, New York’s trysting place for gay men in the hedonistic years before the outbreak of AIDS. From 1968 to 1974 this infamous mecca of Manhattan was home away from home for thousands of gay men. When owner and operator Steven Ostrow instituted a weekly cabaret show featuring rising stars like Bette Midler, Barry Manilow, LaBelle, and others, the Continental became the hip meeting ground for the beautiful and infamous. Ingram’s saucy film details the importance of the Continental in launching both the sexual and gay revolutions into the mainstream consciousness and in the process becoming a never again seen legendary component of both gay and nightlife culture. The film also regales the viewer with the fascinating life of Ostrow, it’s one of a kind, one time owner who went on to conquer brave, new creative worlds – including a long cherished dream of becoming an opera singer.
