Valencia
A national community of queer filmmakers, writers, drag queens, performance artists, stylists, musicians and visual artists all gathered to create a film adaptation of the underground classic memoir Valencia. With over a dozen different filmmakers each taking on a single “chapter,’” what emerges is a kaleidoscopic vision of San Francisco’s vibrant Mission District in the early 1990s, a low-rent playground for a generation of punk lesbians who came of age during the birth of the Queer Nation. Valencia documents the rise of a punk lesbian diaspora through the experience of Michelle, a rootless twenty-something searching for sex and love, drugs and adventure, rock ‘n roll and poetry. Each filmmaker (including Afternoon Delight director and writer/producer of Six Feet Under Jill Soloway and The Watermelon Woman director Cheryl Dunye) was encouraged to shoot their chapters in accordance with their own vision, taking one of the queerest books in gay literature and queering it further. The result is a sexy, inspired crazy-quilt, both literal and experimental, which traces the path of one perfectly lost little girl, trying to find her place in the world. Directed by: Hilary Goldberg, Silas Howard, Cheryl Dunye, Aubree Bernier-Clarke, Lares Feliciano, Dia Felix, Alexa Inkeles, Jerry Lee, Peter Anthony, Sharon Barnes, Cary Cronenwett, Bug Davidson, Samuael Topiary, Olivia Parriot, Jill Soloway, Courtney Trouble, Michelle Lawler, Sara St. Martin, Chris Vargas, Greg Youmans.
