Stranger By The Lake
Franck spends the long summer days at a concealed gay cruising area near a lake. Between daily trysts in the woods, Franck strikes up an improbable friendship with the middle-aged Henri, who is straight but curious. Yet Franck only has eyes for the powerfully built Michel with his dark, smoldering looks and, unfortunately for Franck, a jealous lover. Franck’s chance for a passionate session with Michel finally presents itself and with it, his desire for this emotionally mysterious new lover becomes insatiable – a desire that is enhanced even after he witnesses Michel commit a terrible crime. Guiraudie’s audacious and sexually explicit study poses fascinating questions about the limits of illicit sexual desire and the eroticism inherent in dangerous situations. The film won the Queer Palm d’Or (Cannes) for directing.
