Childhood girlfriends Andy, a lesbian, and Liv, who is straight, reunite to scatter Andy’s father’s ashes from LA to Austin where Liv will audition for the role of a vixen spy in a noir film. Between performing mini-funerals in surreal Southwestern landscapes, Andy and Liv scramble through wreckage in the Mojave Airplane Cemetery, jump topless off cliffs in Sedona, turn sand dunes into projection screens at White Sands National Monument, climb oil rigs in West Texas, raise Hell in Austin, and tantalize each other with the possibility of taking their friendship further. The Most Fun I’ve Ever Had With My Pants On features witty dialogue, mild military cross-dressing, a fetching underground soundtrack, and gorgeous scenery. Writer-director Drew Denny stars in her debut film along with the quirky Sarah Hagan (Freaks and Geeks, Buffy the Vampire Slayer), each eliciting lots of laughter and a few tears in this dark comedy that interweaves autobiography, documentary, fiction, and camp. It’s a bright, exuberant variation on Thelma & Louise – with the lesbian subtext front and center and it’s no surprise that festival audiences have been eager to go along for the ride with this charming road trip movie.
