Stand Up! A Musical Celebration of Equality
This Lakeside Pride Symphonic Band program highlights music that reflects the struggle for equality around the world. Be among the first to experience the Chicago premiere of Colors: A Celebration, a special 2013 commission by the Atlanta Freedom Bands for the 2013 Lesbian and Gay Band Association Annual Conference. Native Chicagoan Mark Camphouse wrote A Movement for Rosa to honor civil rights heroine Rosa Parks. David Maslanka was inspired by the Vietnamese Buddhist pacifist-monk Thich Nhat Hanh and the meditative practice of mindfulness to compose Give Us This Day. He wrote: “Give us this very moment of aware aliveness so that we can build a future in the face of a most dangerous and difficult time.” The concert culminates in two works that inspire a sense of victory, transcendent peace, and hope for the future: Mendelssohn's triumphant Wedding March, followed by Frank Ticheli's shimmering work based on the American lyrical poet Sara Teasdale's There Will Be Rest. Single Tickets: $20. $12 senior and student. ON SALE OCT. 7. A portion of the proceeds from all ticket sales will benefit Equality Illinois.
