The Night Watch
Based on the novel of the same name by Sarah Waters, whose novels Fingersmith and Tipping the Velvet were previously made into acclaimed BBC productions, The Night Watch is a love story told in reverse chronology. The drama opens in 1947 as the country is trying to rebuild itself after the war. Set against this turbulent backdrop, four young Londoners are inextricably linked by their wartime experiences and their clandestine love affairs. Kay roams the streets haunted by some traumatic personal loss. Helen and Viv run a marriage bureau, helping people rebuild their shattered lives by finding love, though their own love lives are troubled as Helen clings to a volatile relationship with Juli and Viv dallies with a married man. Viv’s gay brother, Duncan, harbors a terrible secret of his own. Moving back in time into the maelstrom of the Blitz, the lives, loves, and losses of these four characters are unraveled and we find out how and why they ended up as they did.
