King's legacy and civil rights cause misrepresented by gays, says IFI

Chicago, IL — A group of Chicago-area ministers and political leaders will hold a press conference on Monday -- the national Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., holiday -- denouncing any connection between civil rights and gay rights.

"The recent passage of the 'civil unions' bill has been trumpeted by some lawmakers as an achievement to civil rights. It is not," the anti-gay Illinois Family Institute (IFI) said in a press release.

IFI and the Catholic Conference of Illinois lobbied hard to block the passage of the Illinois Religious Freedom Protection and Civil Union Act (SB 1716) in Illinois, which passed on Dec. 1, 2010.

The event organized by IFI is being held Monday, Jan. 17 at 10:30 a.m. at the Freedom Baptist Church in Hillside, a western suburb of Chicago.

"For years, homosexual activists have exploited an absurd and offensive analogy between homosexuality and race in order to advance their moral and political agenda," the group said in a press release. "Homosexualists use the heroic battle to end racial discrimination as a Trojan Horse to eradicate moral judgments about homosexual conduct. All civilized persons -- particularly African-Americans -- should be outraged."

The group said that religious leaders including Pastor Al Cleveland, Bishop Michael Love, Dr. Hiram Crawford, Dr. Eric Wallace, Pastor Larry Rogers and the Rev. Isaac C. Hayes, a member of the Illinois Coalition of Black Republicans, will speak at the event.

ChicagoPride.com has been unable to confirm whether State Sen. and Rev. James Meeks (D-Chicago) plans to attend Monday's event. Meeks, who has received support from IFI, was the lone African American and Democrat in the Illinois Senate and House to vote against the historic civil unions bill. Meeks dropped out of the race for Chicago mayor on Dec. 24.

"Skin color is not analogous to behavior. To equate homosexuality to race is offensive and perverts the noble cause of a great man and an important movement in our history," Illinois Family Institute executive director David Smith said in a press release.

Ironically, the Illinois Family Institute is listed as a hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC).

"Civil Rights belong to every American," The Civil Rights Agenda (TCRA) president Jacob Meister told ChicagoPride.com Monday afternoon. "The suggestion that African American's have a monopoly on civil rights or that civil rights is purely a racial matter is absurd." (Read Jacob Meister's full statement)

TCRA was instrumental in lobbying the Illinois General Assembly to pass the Illinois Religious Freedom Protection and Civil Union Act.

Dr. King was assassinated in 1968. Before her death, his widow, Coretta Scott King speculated that Dr. King would have supported gay rights, if he had lived.

"Freedom from discrimination based on sexual orientation is surely a fundamental civil right in any great democracy, as much as freedom from racial, religious, gender, or ethnic discrimination… I appeal to everyone who believes in Martin Luther King, Jr.'s dream to make room at the table of brotherhood and sisterhood for lesbian and gay people," she said.

Whatever. Let them be on the wrong side of history. I will listen to his wife who knew him best.
What hypocrites
Between having to fear their community churches for being gay and politically not finding the representatives to stand for their gay rights, I wouldn't want to support such hypocrites either. It feels absolutely wrong for them to shut the door on gay rights when they know exactly how it feels to be segregated and not enjoy the equal rights that an individual should have. They ought to be VERY careful about what they say. KARMA. That is all.

@Sonny: I agreee!...
These Black ministers ought to be ashamed of themselves, wasting time and effort to oppress a minority group when they themselves were victims of oppression! Dr. Martin Luther King defended the rights of ALL disenfranchised men/women and that includes homosexuals. In fact Dr King's chief advisor was GAY! In fact if it wasn't for Bayard Rustin, Dr. King wouldn't have been the great Civil Right leader he turned out to be; probably he would have ended up being the creator of the Black Panther. It was that gay man who taught Dr King to focus on non-violent approach as an effective form of protest, so it is an insult to Dr. King and to Mr Bayard Rustin that these so-called Church ministers are fighting to abuse a group of people. Homosexuality is not a behavior or a lifestyle choice for gays, it is who they are!

I can't believe such ignorance still exist in 2011! Well they can meet and discuss and pump millions into making homosexuals' lives miserable, but God is not sleeping and I will prophesy that they will see that they are doing Jesus a disservice by basking in their manly doctrines based on misinterpretations of scriptures.

Civil Rights is Everybody's Rights!
Pt2. - I also have to say that it is also these same Black and African American communities that are desperate and lack the help and support for HIV/AIDS prevention and rely on the resources by traveling north to the Boystown community or none at all. The communities would have the funding and support if only their leaders weren't worried about their political gain. These SAME political and religious leaders have the nerve to separate the two ideas and have a press conference to note that gay rights and color rights are different. ?????
It's a shame that they'd rather portray their great uniter as a great divider, especially coming from people who proclaim to know something about God.
I believe all Americans who believe in freedom, tolerance and human rights have a responsibility to oppose bigotry and prejudice based on sexual orientation.

I now have the same reaction when I hear the term "black minister" or "republican". Both are huge hypocrites.

Do these idiots know anything about the Great Dr King? His closets friend and advisor was a gay man and Dr. King supported him 100%. WTF is wrong with these people. Does the African-American community think that it is their turn to discriminate against an entire "race" of people? Does hundreds of years of discrimination give them the right to become the very bigots they fought so hard to end?
Any organization with the word "Family" in the title seems to spew nothing but hate to anything that doesn't fit perfectly into their rigid definitions. I can't imagine such hatred coming from Dr. Martin Luther King Jr himself.
Dr. King didn't have a problem with Bayard Rustin, a gay man who was an important figure in the civil rights movement.

The next time a "law" is created to harm Black people and only black people in THIS CENTURY, then these shills can take their wide stance on the issue.

Not before...

(Sheesh)

Don't think that's the case … I think Dr. King would have been able to extrapolate his beliefs about equality to LGBT issues. To assign that sort of narrowmindedness to him is just as bad as ignoring his sacrifices for the betterment of this very nation.

Christians are not following the word of the one who created Jesus! Majority of the "christians" are following a man made doctrine created by paul! GOD destroy communities for homosexuality! Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven. 5:17 Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil. 5:18 For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled. 5:19 Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so, he shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven: but whosoever shall do and teach them, the same shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.
