Operating in Plain Sight

So we got some a tip that a certain aldercreature was running a speakeasy. We'll call it "Stan Rather" to keep it on the down-low. We had a contributor check it out and this is we discovered with zero effort:

  • You enter the restaurant and ask the staff on the sly, "Can we dine in?" They'll look around and whisper, "Yes" and take you to the "VIP Room." Chances improve dramatically if they know you, and they knew our contributor.

This particular "Stan Rather" has three seating areas for those unfamiliar - the main seating area along the windows and two overflow rooms. There are empty chairs and tables stacked in the main seating area so it looks like they aren't serving people. The overflow room to the southwest has no exterior windows and the one window looking into the room not line-of-site so people can't see in.

The wait staff admits this isn't legit, but "Tom" told them it's okay as long as they call it a "private party."A quick headcount the day in question revealed far more than ten persons.

It is certainly surprising this was going on in a law abiding town like Chicago, especially when the mayor and governor have both said there is no indoor seating allowed in any restaurants, but two sets of rules you know.

Pictures - we promised some pictures (click for larger versions): The 03 December newspaper and menu for "Stan Rather"

Dining in - the decor is well known

No mention of dining in....but there were over a dozen people there.

Our contributor asked a few patrons what they thought of an aldercreature disobeying a mayoral decree and gubernatorial mandate, but many scurried away, probably ashamed to have been caught exercising their democrat privilege while lesser restaurants remain shuttered and dying. Others were happy someone was finally working against Groot's onerous orders. At least the aldercreature has a six-figure part time job to fall back on.

Maybe someone could ask if the aldercreature is submitting Sales Tax receipts to do his little part keeping the city economy stumbling along. Perhaps he knows (as more people are discovering daily) that the lock down is political bullshit, healthy people aren't dying, restaurants and bars are not super spreader locations and the damage this is doing to the long term economy is incalculable.

This "Investigative Journalism" thing is pretty easy - we can't imagine needing an actual degree or talent to do it. All you need is a set of balls and a don't-give-a-fuck attitude. A taste for cinnamon rolls is also recommended.

Didn’t tunny vote against lightfoots budget and eliminating 600 vacancies? Didn’t tunny not endorse Kim foxx? Seems like an odd guy to go after. This was a place a lot of coppers frequented with really polite staff. Guess that will end. Hope none of the employees go broke now when they close up.

Tom Tunney is a dummy! What a piece of work. I thought aldermen were supposed to follow the rules that they make up and vote for?!

Remember when he said he would sell the restaurant if he won election because it wouldn’t be appropriate or ethical to run it as alderman? Then after elected said, “Nah. I changed my mind.” All you voters in his ward got hoodwinked. Because this seems pretty unethical.

Think of all those restaurants and bars that don’t feel like they could pull this off because they don’t have the clout. But they had to suffer, just grin abs bear it, and lay people off. Can all the other restaurants in his ward do this now too? What about other wards?

Speaking of laying off people, I wonder if Tom and his employees are somehow cheating they system with unemployment claims.

This is absolutely OUTRAGEOUS! Everyone in the restaurant and bar industry should be protesting in front of city hall in mass! Hell, the citizens of Chicago should be outraged. These Chicago politicians do whatever they want. People should rise up and say enough. They should call for this aldermans resignation along with Lightfoot’s. What are the odds she has been there?

Re: the Tunney apologists, saying he's not on Groot's side and whatnot

Obstructing the mayor is certainly a good start but has he done much of anything about all the businesses getting totally screwed over by this rampant dickery? If so then fair play, he's doing what he can, but if not it's rather a bit hypocritical to be sitting on enough power to at least make a stink but not do anything. Kind of like all those fair-weather fascists in WWII who enjoyed the many perks of mid-level party membership and only claimed to not be down with top leadership's bad behavior once they went down in flames.

Reading over Mr. Tunney's bio it seems like about the only time he's ever pushed local legislative action has been when it benefits his restaurants. This sort of thing is why conflicts of interest can be dangerous; even if his intentions are strictly honorable (and they may well be, I don't know the guy well enough to say either way) it raises a lot of questions if the cards always seem to fall one way. I'm not saying we should run the guy out on a rail or anything, but some criticism seems justified given the circumstances.

China has Hong Kong back and look what is taking place now. All those protesters, now being taken off to re-education camps. Think this is not possible here in the United States. All those Republican voters might need to see the light sometime soon. Never say never, data is data, they know who votes for who. Not sure how I feel about this story. Many restaurants are defying the order in the city because they have to to survive. I’m not saying this place has too or the owner needs it but the employees do. I hope this doesn’t start a chain reaction all over the city with inspectors going around now to shut everything down.

----------------

I don't know how he voted for Foxx or the budget. I do know that he voted for a special deal that afforded him a few dozen police officers in return for his vote. He made this deal with Emanuel back then and got it. How many other aldermen got this privlege? Not many (if any).

It's not about coppers not having a place to eat lunch now or the staff who won't come into work now (assuming Tunney puts a stop to it.) It's about a fucking alderman that is able to do this and get away with it while the average Joe resturant owner can't. Or the avereage Joe bar owner can't. I know two. One us a grown man, brought to tears beacuse he can't open up. He doesn't know what will happen if he doesn't get financial assistance from the city, state, or fed gov't. The thing is, he does't want it. He just wants to open up and run his business.

The take out thing doesn't work for him. He's not set up for it. He doesn't have a large sidewalk where he can serve food outside in a tent (which is a fucking joke. Have you seen these sealed tents with heaters? How is that any different than a indoors room?) He doesn't have a parking lot to set a tent up. (By the way, Tunney does. Why the fuck doesn't he have a tent set up? You know why now, because he can get away with this and serve inside and nobody will call him out on it, that's why. (Well, nobody except for SCC!)

So spare us "where are all the coppers going to eat now" shit. I'm glad SCC is getting this out there. To hold these fucking politicians feet to the fire. They live like they are a different class and have a different set of rules. They live this way and operate this way BECAUSE WE LEMMINGS LET THEM GET AWAY WITH IT.

12/07/2020 12:27:00 AM

Right after they protest they should ALL open for business. Strength in numbers! That's what its going to take to turn the tide, if not they will continue on with this social experiment. The next protest should be at the ballot box. Vote them ALL out from the city council to the governor and if the next batch doesn't do right, vote them out too.

Honestly as a business owner I don’t disagree with him at all. You that live in Mt. Greenwood know lots of businesses that are still seating people indoors. I don’t know about now but Ann Sather’s used to be good to the police. Didn’t Tunney vote against LL ridiculous budget? He’s keeping people employed. He also favored the Grassroots Alliance for Police Accountabilty which at least left the final decisions regarding oversight in the hands of dept and mayor’s office and not some completely unhinged citizen’s alliance group. Why go after this guy if you are going to go after someone? What - you didn’t have spies in Mt Greenwood?

Last night's "Shameless" episode did the same thing! Now we know how these businesses are barely surviving in that fucked up city. When I was working out in that area, we would grab breakfast there once in a while. The owner was always welcoming to POs. When we were assigned riot control, the guy would let you sit in there and warm up. A true gentleman, if you know what I mean. I'm sure more than a few neighborhood bars are letting in regulars. If these businesses/ bars want to stay open, they should feed the bums once a week. This would appease the SJW class into backing them up. Groot dont give a shit about taxpayers but doesn't want to piss off her "progressive" voter base. I hope more businesses adapt like this to that fucked up city...

I know Tom as a stand up guy. I think Tom and the Mayor really don't believe restaurants are the problem. The Mayor said this. Then took it back. I watch first hand people walking out of Jewel on Halloween with liquor enough to kill them, but I am sure it was for a house party. Than in November covit rose. Sorry blame it on the restaurants and bars again. Sorry the Governor already closed them. He is clueless! Try to get unemployment, it's a joke! He may not have to own the coronavirus Virus. NO on one should. But unemployment, is under his watch!
Coronavirus is now nine months old. They have had plenty of time to work with restaurants to set up a proper plan with their inspectors instead of inspecting them after the fact. That is on the Mayor. I blame it on me too. I thought maybe three months it would last, I was wrong! Now I sit wondering what is my next step. Restaurant people want guidance from are leader. THEN THEY NEED TO STAND BY IT!!!

I ate at Ann Sather's at least a couple of hundred times in the early 1970s, when it was a small restaurant with a counter, and Ann Sather herself waited tables. Other waitresses were all everyday familiar faces. Just an ordinary coffee shop with very good food. Probably $3.95 to $4.95 for an excellent meal, appetizer to dessert meal.

I was there a few years ago. Tables crammed closely together, the food too expensive for the quality, and of course I didn't like the owner.

As the Aldercreature circumvents ‘executive orders” on citizen lockdowns like those in penitentiaries, Cook County Democrat not-my-president preckwinkle requires government issued identification for a $600 cash assistance benefit for covid-19 related financial “hardships” for the chronically disadvantaged. Government identification is required to get Cook County federal paid Covid-19 relief money, but no identification required or requested for voting. And borders matter. Be sure to provide proof you are a resident with a registration address in suburban Cook County to qualify for the free cash money. Again proof of residency is not required to cast a fraudulent ballot on behalf of the democrat party.

We have been conditioned to think the poor cannot make an effort to register to vote in person while being identified as suppressed and disenfranchised. The mantra that subjects of Cook County suburbia are too poor to pay for government identification is the other excuse for not having to verify one’s identity prior to voting. Requirement for proof of residency and government issued identification are called voter suppression and racism right from the democratic playbook of dirty tricks and schemes. But to get the democrat party controlled relief money, both identification papers and proof of residency are required to get the cash money benefit. They control the narrative and take credit for their compassion purchasing or bribing vulnerable populations. Commissioner preckwinkle you are both a racist and a benefit suppressionist denying people of color their deserved President Trump Covid-19 relief money.

To qualify for the Cash Assistance Program, applicants must be a resident of suburban Cook County and provide the following documents:

• One form of government issued identification that includes your current residential address or two alternative forms of identification
• Proof of your COVID-19 hardship due to unpaid leave, care for vulnerable or infected relatives, or loss of wages due to business or school closures.
• Proof of household income meeting eligibility requirements.
• Bank information including account and routing number if you choose to direct deposit. You can typically find this on a check.

Not to mention that these bar/restaurants are more bar than anything for a lot of people who go there. So, they are just sending out drunk, incapable of responsibility, people out into the area after they've trekked in to still be able to sit at a bar and get hammered until 2am.

What will Larry have to say? While others were run out of business by this dictator he is still doing fine, plus he has that nice alderman salary. Typical democrat, typical Chicago. What a corrupt demented city and county and state we live in. Shameful and blatantly unconstitutional and hypocritical

It's sad how slaves think they need permission from a bunch of old corrupt politicians in order to work and feed your families. Where's the backbone? Open your restaurants en mass. They can't shit you all down. As long as 30% don't follow theses dictators. There is no way they can enforce their decrees. But if you are all scared to feed your families " you do what you did, you get what you got ".

Proles-85% of population.

Its all spelled out nicely in Orwell's 1894.
As police, I think we are just high level proles who are supposed to keep the rest of the proles away from the outer party.
The inner party probably has a different force to keep the outer party from bothering the inner party.
JB and Larry are trying to get bumped up to the inner party.

glad some of you think he is pro police. I assume you mean he isn't an ahole to your faces. He was Rahm's counsel guy (how would you like that as your legacy), and helped rubber stamp drastic cuts in headcount in the 19th. That practice was hidden though as position never filled. Helped staff Rahm's palace guard while the rest of us are left to fend for ourselves. Its gotten worse though as many report, resulting in a de funding of the police by any measure. But hey, as long as he comps you a sticky bun guess he is pro police....

He has no finanical stake this resturant? You're nuts. And why go after him?
Because he's using his taxer payer paid position to do something that more than 95% of resturant owners are unable to do!

I see Cwb Chicago has done a story on him and the Scum-Times woke from hibernation and called asking questions. He hung up on them, got his panties in a twist when they asked how many people he has served in these private rooms. And how many poor people have lost everything this year.

All the people defending him saying he is police friendly are clueless. Is he anti police ? No. Does he do some nice things for cops ? Yes. But that doesn’t take away the actual fact he is a millionaire alderman who is in violation of state and city rules blatantly violating them when he is supposed to setting an example making his 6 figure salary. It’s funny how cops fall all over themselves because he is an okay guy when it comes to police. That’s not the point ! Tell that to all the businesses in his ward that don’t open because of fear the city scares them
with and for all the businesses in his wards who have received huge fines. He is a hypocrite and should know better. The only way I would have respect for him for him to make a statement against the mayor and governor denouncing their illegal orders. If he doesn’t do that that he has no backbone and he should be scrutinized to the very end. Police friendly or police hater ......Doesn’t matter. Sick of all these liberal Democrat hypocrites who tell us what to do but do the opposite. Stop making excuses for this guy. He has had a charmed life with millions in the bank and simply gets elected year after year for the sole purpose that he is simply gay. Just because he donates some free turkey and stuffing to the police station for a holiday doesn’t get him free pass with immunity. Trust me he knew exactly what he was doing and it wasn’t an error in judgement. Did he pay taxes to state on all those secret meals , bet he didn’t report that ! Stop trying to defend these politicians who work on behalf of a corrupt Democrat city council and make rules for the little guy but the same rules don’t apply to the kings. Funny how CWB AND SECOND CITY COP has the balls to do these investigative work but the all the other fake news mainstream media are the Lap Dogs of city hall

There was no vote in the city council to close anything. It's a state mandate from JB the Hutt that stopped indoor restaurant dining.

Usually I agree with you 100%. Believe me, not a fan of Tunney either. But on this one I've got to give the little shit some credit. There are restaurants all over the City that are open in defiance of the order. Drive by any one of them and you'll see squads parked in front like it was a regular day. I know the guys have to eat and they seem to have no problem going into these businesses in violation of the lockdown. I'm sure you wouldn't appreciate asshole libtards taking pictures of the police sitting in these places having breakfast.
Maybe you should salute the little twit for finally growing some balls.

BOO-HOO. He says he made a "mistake". Ahhhhhh, no. You knew what the rules are, legal or not, you knew EXACTLY what you were doing Alder Tom!!!! So the white wealthy millionaire restaurant owner, elected city official can do it in his white neighborhood ward for his privileged "regular" white customers, but a black business for African American customers, get a $10,000 fine for doing the same thing. Oh, I see how it is! Rich whitey politicians do what they want always keeping the black man down. And ironically, blacks still vote for these hypocrite corrupt racist Democrats. Sheep are led to the slaughters and never question anything, Perfect example: KIM FOXX sworn in for a 2nd term, while gang bangers are killing and maiming the African American communities! BIZARRO WORLD. Sounds like when Billionaire JB ripped out toilets out of his mansion to save on taxes. And the pathetic scum bag media overlook all these scandals because they are liberal indoctrinated losers who swore an oath the the Democrat plantation. God forbid, Trump said one minor non-politically correct comment in a speech and thats their news cycle for a month. Pathetic.

So this proves Alderman Tunney is lying. He said it was "sporatic". You're saying it was everyday. Maybe you're too young to understand the hypocrisy that is enfuraint to me. That this public offical was participating in. You certainly aren't another resturant owner that has had to shut down your entire fucking business because you're afraid of loosing your liqour license - I AM! I had to shut down and not make a single dime. I may have to close completely. I don't want to dip into my retirement but I may have to just to get through this. I am not a millionare like the owner of the resturant where you like to eat lunch.

- Did he do it because he saw an excellent opportunity, with no little to no competition from law-abiding restaurants?
