Tree Sequoia was at Stonewall the night of the Riots and 50 years later is still slinging drinks at the historic Stonewall Inn. Sidetrack and The Legacy Project are pleased to present an evening with Tree to hear his story and relive the historic night that was the catalyst for a new era in the fight for LGBTQ Equality. Tree will sit down with local gay historian, and Legacy Project co-founder, Owen Keehnen for a one-on-one interview about that night. They'll discuss what he saw, what he heard, how it felt, and talk about the role our bars have played in the history of the LGBTQ Civil Rights Movement, beginning with the most famous bar of them all: THE STONEWALL INN. The program will conclude with a Q & A. "Life before the riots meant you risked imprisonment, being outed and ostracized from your family. And after the riots, it was the first time that members of the LGBT community could walk the streets with pride." Many historians credit the Stonewall riots as the catalyst that ignited the gay rights movement, led by trans women like Marsha P. Johnson. "Sidetrack is thrilled to be helping bring this tremendous piece of history to Chicago. Tree Sequoia was there! His insight to how gay bars have shaped our Gay Rights Movement is something I cannot wait to hear more about. Gay Bars are an integral part of our common LGBTQ+ history. For decades, gay bars served as community centers. They are the places our community met to galvanize, celebrate, mourn losses, find their tribe, find their lovers, find their friends. And Tree has seen all of this first hand. What a great way to commemorate 50 years since Stonewall!" Brad Balof, Sidetrack GM Doors to Main/Cherry/Back Bars open at 6pm for this event, program at 7pm. There is no Cover. Arrive early for prime seating. Sidetrack opens at 3pm every weekday.
