GayCo Productions gets Poked

Tue. August 19, 2003 12:00 AM

Legal Sodomy! Confused President! Mad Pope! Queer Bishop! God Save the Queens.

Chicago, IL - GayCo Productions is back on top with POKED, a new sketch comedy revue opening Wednesday, August 20, 2003 at 8:30 P.M in The Second City e.t.c. (1608 North Wells in Piper’s Alley) as part of the Second City Unhinged series.

From the Supreme Court’s celebration of gay sex to life after the gay marriage collapses, POKED will have you bending over with laughter. Lesbians look for love in a speed-date gone awry; gay party boys grow old and pay for the sins of their youth; Broadway gets real with a ‘salute to sodomy’; the promise of gay marriage in Canada lures couples over the border; and in the end, GayCo marries personal pain with national struggle to create their most intimate show yet.

Born at the Second City’s Outreach Program in 1996, GayCo Productions has established itself as one of Chicago’s premiere sketch comedy troupes, garnering critical acclaim for their revues “Whitney Houston, We Have a Problem,” “Don’t Ask, Don’t Teletubby,” and “99 Bottles of Queer on the Wall.” The company has received two After Dark awards from Gay Chicago Magazine.

POKED runs Wednesdays through September 24, 2003. Tickets for Second City Unhinged are $5.00. Proceeds from performances on Wednesday, August 27 will be donated to Season of Concern, the Chicagoland theatre community’s fundraising effort in the fight against AIDS. Reservations for all shows can be made at 312.337.3992 or on-line at www.secondcity.com.

This new revue is directed by Second City alum Jim Zulevic, whose TV appearances include “The Drew Carey Show,” “Seinfeld,” “The Andy Dick Show,” “Early Edition,” and MTV’s “Lyricists Lounge.” Musical direction is by Stephanie McCullough with choreography by David DuMortier. Heather Elam stage manages. POKED is written and performed by Jim Bennett, John Bonny, Mary Beth Burns, Andrew Eninger, Judy Fabjance, Butch Jerinic, Homer Marrs, and Celeste Pechous.

Also on the evening’s line-up: “Growing Up Butch,” written and performed by Butch Jerinic. This one-woman show is a semi-autobiographical look at growing up as the youngest and only straight child to off-the-boat Croatian parents. It’s a little Croatian, a little gay, and it’s got a whole bunch of judgment. Original direction in Los Angeles by Irene Pinn. Additional direction by Tracy Thorpe. Butch Jerinic is an ensemble member of GayCo Productions who also performs in Chicago with ComedySportz and Second City Communications. Butch is available for interviews at 773.882.5132.
