"Real World" Star Joins Growing List of Celebrity Endorsements

Washington, D.C. - Danny Roberts has endorsed former Vermont Governor Howard Dean for the Democratic nomination for President in 2004. Roberts, best known for his role on MTV's "The Real World - New Orleans," joins a growing list of gay and lesbian celebrities endorsing Dean, including television star Chad Allen and rock star Melissa Etheridge.

"I believe that Dean represents a shift back to the center where America is cooperating with the world to make this a better place for all people," Roberts told Out for Dean during a recent interview. "We've gotten too far away from this in the past few years and it's made this a scary time to live," he added.

Dean first gained visibility among gays and lesbians when he became the only Governor to sign into law a state statute recognizing gay civil unions. But almost all the candidates for the Democratic nomination have declared their support for similar policies.

Roberts thinks Dean's overwhelming support in the gay community derives from his stand on other issues. "I love that he makes affordable healthcare for all Americans a priority and that he sees the intrinsic need to protect the environment while balancing business interests," says Roberts. "The man represents many perfect compromises on issues between the left and right."

Roberts, who has been involved with the Dean for America campaign since before Dean announced his candidacy, believes that efforts to label Dean a liberal are political tactics.

"He's truly not radical at all!" exclaims Roberts, who notes that the Governor kept Vermont's budget balanced for five terms.

Roberts's advice for overcoming the perception that Dean is too liberal to be elected?: "Spread the word! So much of Dean's support is through word of mouth and the internet."
