The AIDS Run & Walk Chicago returned to Chicago’s
Soldier Field on Saturday to help raise awareness and funds for individuals who are living with or vulnerable to HIV/AIDS.
Over 2,500 people participated in the 32nd annual event.
Mayor Brandon Johnson, Senator Mike Simmons, and Alderman Lamont Robinson stopped by to show support.
"We have a goal by the year of 2030,” said Johnson. “We want to make sure that our walk and our run puts an end to this epidemic.”
AIDS Foundation of Chicago, the event organizer, is actively working towards Getting to Zero, a state-wide initiative to end the HIV epidemic in Illinois by 2030.
The
Chicago Gay Men's Chorus and the Lakeside Pride Marching Band were also part of the pre-event festivities, hosted by WGN's Dean Richards.
Funds raised Saturday will benefit the AIDS Foundation Chicago (AFC) and 30 other community organizations, which provide essential services for those living with the illness.
Since its inception, more than 24,500 participants have participated in the traditional 5K, 10K and 5K Walk and Roll,, raising $6 million to battle the HIV epidemic.
