CPD: 'The gas pedal was completely deployed to the ground.'

Chicago police on Tuesday announced that a man has been charged with murder after three men were killed in a hit-and-run earlier this month outside a popular LGBTQ bar on the city’s south side.

Tavis Dunbar, 34, is charged with three counts of first-degree murder in the deaths of 23-year-old Jaylen Ausley, 27-year-old Devonta Vivetter, and 25-year-old Donald Huey.

Dunbar is also charged with attempted murder in connection with the 21-year-old victim who survived.

Police said Dunbar, accompanied by his attorney, turned himself in on Monday in the 5100 block of S. Wentworth.

The crash happened around 5 a.m. on Aug. 14 in the 7000 block of South Jeffery Blvd, just outside the Jeffrey Pub, located at 7041 S. Jeffery Blvd.

A deeply disturbing video of the accident obtained by CWB Chicago shows the silver sedan speeding down the wrong side of the street before striking the men so hard that several bodies fly into the air.

The car was recovered just blocks from the scene.

Chicago Police Chief of Detectives Brendan Deenihan said information from the car's "black box" showed the driver was speeding when he hit the four men.

"The gas pedal was completely deployed to the ground. Never attempted to tap the brakes when this incident occurred," Deenihan said.

Police said there is no evidence to support that this was a hate crime. A motive is unknown.

Update: Judge Susana Ortiz ordered Dunbar held without bail during a bond hearing on Tuesday afternoon.

Dunbar  asked a friend to help him with an alibi, prosecutors said.

But she refused to help, telling him he had killed two people.

“Actually,” Dunbar allegedly replied, “it’s three.”
