New York, NY - Former ABC's "Bachelor" Colton Underwood publically came out in an interview with Good Morning America this morning.

“I’m gay. And I came to terms with that earlier this year and have been processing it," the Bachelor star told anchor Robin Roberts in the interview. "The next step in all of this is, sort of, letting people know."

In the fourteen minute segment, Underwood talked about the process, darkness and pain of his journey and discovery, including thoughts of suicide. "I would have rather died then say I'm gay. And that was sort of my wake-up call," he added.

"Through the nerves, I can see the joy," Roberts said to Underwood in response to speaking his truth.

"I'm emotional in such a good happy positive way," Underwood replied. "I’m the happiest and healthiest I’ve ever been in my life.”

In addition to being a reality television personality, Underwood, 29, is a former football player. He played tight end at Illinois State and was signed by the San Diego Chargers as a free agent in 2014. Following, he joined the the Oakland Raiders and Philadelphia Eagles.

Underwood became a contestant on the 14th season of ABC's The Bachelorette, and was then announced as the lead of the 23rd season of ABC's The Bachelor.
