The Ring Thing
When filmmaker Sarah accidentally proposes to her girlfriend Kristen, it just might mean the end of their relationship instead of a new beginning. While Kristen is enthusiastic at the prospect, it turns out that Sarah has deep-seated fears of marriage, rooted in her own parents’ divorce. A happy, romantic lesbian relationship threatened by a heteronormative institution—of course! The conflicting attitudes of the couple are played out in this fictional drama and also through documentary interviews with same-sex couples on their thoughts about marriage, which are framed as Sarah’s own footage—her filmmaker-means of trying to understand her fear of this formalized commitment, or, rather, her fear of its failure and an ultimately-certain divorce. Meanwhile, while Sarah is working on her issues, Kristen has lost her old job, been offered a new job in a different city, and is not sure she can wait for Sarah to figure out what she wants. Will the ring become a broken circle, or remain a symbol of unity? Actor Nicole J. Pursell expected in attendance!
