This in-depth course is 12 hours over two weekends. Each session, students have the opportunity to practice physical skills, awareness skills, verbal skills, and social skills that will enhance their safety in a variety of situations. We use the Five Fingers of Self-Defense (Think, Yell, Run, Fight, and Tell) to teach people how to accurately assess their risk and respond to violence before it escalates, while also teaching physical techniques to defend against direct physical and sexual assault. Topics covered include boundary-setting, de-escalation, and bystander intervention in a variety of contexts, fighting from the ground, responding to an armed assailant, releases from grabs, dealing with harassment, recognizing healthy relationships, and more. Classes are a mix of group discussion, role plays, and physical drills and activities. Our goal is to reduce both the prevalence and the harm of violence. Open to adults and teens 15 and up.
