Our symphonic season comes so a close with the Symphonic Band’s World’s Fair. Inspired by the 1893 Columbian World’s Exposition in Chicago, this concert brings a sample of music from almost every continent right here to our audience. We begin with Sakai’s Fanfare of Wakakusa Hill and Chance’s Variations on a Korean Folk Song, then jump around a bit for Stuart’s Three Ayres from Gloucester, Smith’s Africa: Ceremony, Song, and Ritual, and our focal piece: Symphony no. 3: Slavyanskaya (1st Movement) by Boris Kozhevnikov. Audiences will find familiarity in the Prelude to Act III from Wagner’s Lohengrin, which will be snarkily contrasted in Emmanuel Chabrier’s Marche Joyeuse. Our program concludes with Abreu’s Brazilian choro Tico-Tico no Fubá and the sexy, sultry Danzón no. 2 by Arturo Márquez, recently popularized by renowned conductor Gustavo Dudamel.
