Eat With Me
David Au (US, 2014, 95 min) In writer/director/editor David Au’s charming food-centric feature, Emma, fed up with her marriage, impulsively packs a suitcase and shows up (unannounced) on her son Elliot’s doorstep for an extended visit. Elliot is already struggling financially with his lackluster Chinese restaurant and an even more lackluster love life, and his nitpicky mother deciding to visit does not help matters. Tense relations are aided a bit by a nosy neighbor (Nicole Sullivan, MAD TV, KING OF QUEENS) who pulls Emma out of her shell and eases her shock in realizing Elliot is gay (albeit accidentally dosing her with ecstasy, in one of the funniest scenes of the movie). George Takei (STAR TREK) offers a touching cameo to round out this sweet film that proves that when words fail, dumplings can solve any conflict. Q&A w/ David Au (director/writer) to follow screening
