The Foxy Merkins
Madeleine Olnek (US, 2013, 82 min) Margaret (co-writer Lisa Haas) is a homeless lesbian hooker trying to make a buck and find a place to stay in the Big Apple. Worldly Jo (Jackie Monahan) takes Margaret under her wing and shares her cozy lodging in a dubious locale. Together they solicit clients in some unusual settings and run amok among closeted Republican women, taking tequila breaks to keep them going. Margaret’s ultimate goal is to find her mother, so they clumsily set out to find her. Alex Karpovsky (GIRLS) makes a hysterical cameo as a merkin salesman in a graveyard. (If you don’t know what a “merkin” is, look it up. You won’t regret it!) This absurdist parody of landmark male hustler films by Madeleine Olnek (CO-DEPENDENT LESBIAN SPACE ALIEN SEEKS SAME) is guaranteed to make you cackle. Showing with Short: A VERY SPECIAL DATE (Susan Earl, Australia, 2013, 7 min) Hilda isn't like everyone else. She has a secret that, if revealed, could cost her her job, her respectability, her home and her family.
