Tom at the Farm
TOM AT THE FARM (Tom à la ferme) Xavier Dolan (Canada, 2013, 102 min) In this thriller by acclaimed director Xavier Dolan (I KILLED MY MOTHER), Tom (played by director Dolan) travels to rural Quebec to attend the funeral of his closeted lover, Guillaume. Psychologically and physically intimidated by his lover’s unhinged and menacing older brother, Francis (Pierre-Yves Cardinal), Tom is held hostage at the farm and falls into a disturbing relationship with Francis, all the while hearing strange hints about an event that clouds the family’s history. Hiding the truth of his relationship with Guillaume from Guillaume’s mother becomes increasingly difficult as she plagues him with questions about Guillaume’s “girlfriend,” Sarah, and wonders why Sarah did not attend the funeral. When Sarah (Evelyn Brochu, ORPHAN BLACK), Tom’s co-worker, attempts to rescue him, she too falls prey to Francis’s manipulations, leaving the viewer to wonder if Tom will ever escape the Stockholm Syndrome that grips him.
