Sandra Bernhard: Sandyland
Sandra Bernhard takes the stage with her band in a live performance that is a raucous mix of political satire, pop culture commentary, and stand-up comedy marinated with her biting signature dose of rock 'n' roll. Since beginning her career at LA’s famed Comedy Store in the 1970s, Sandra Bernhard has written and starred in numerous one-woman shows, acted in movies and on television, recorded albums, and authored books. Appearing in Martin Scorcese’s 1983 film The King of Comedy, she dug open the dark sides of celebrity and media obsession. In the early 1990s Bernhard played Nancy Bartlett—the first openly gay character on a network sitcom—on Roseanne. She has had guest starring or recurring roles on numerous other shows, among them Good Christian Belles, Hot in Cleveland, Will & Grace, The Sopranos, The L Word, and The Larry Sanders Show. Bernhard has appeared more than 30 times on Late Night with David Letterman and has been a regular guest of Howard Stern’s since the early 1980s. As an author, Bernhard has written three books: Confessions of a Pretty Lady; Love, Love and Love; and May I Kiss You on the Lips, Miss Sandra? Her work has also been published in numerous magazines, including the New Yorker, Vanity Fair, Conde Nast Traveler, Rolling Stone, Interview, and Spy.
