On April 16th of this year, a 23-year-old transgender woman in Chicago was murdered by a gunshot to the head and found in an alley in West Garfield Park. Her name was Paige Clay, and she was described as a
luminary in the ball scene in Chicago. So far, no one has been taken into custody for her murder.
Although I didn't know Paige and I'm not part of the Chicago community, this story has affected me because I think of all the people in my own community in Omaha who are part of the ball scene and have become entertainers and icons for all of the LGBT community. I think about how my own community would react if we lost one of our own and how that would affect our own sense of personal safety.
On May 1st, the National Center for Transgender Equality and others will be attending an event titled, Justice for Paige. If you can attend, please come and show your support for another person lost due to ignorance and hate. If you have any information about what had happened to Paige, please let authorities know.
