Photographer, Michael Snell

Photographer Michael Snell specializes in distinctive male imagery done on location. As an openly gay man, he has a strong attraction for the male physique and male erotica - the male image has become his specialty. Snell first picked up a camera at the age of 16, when he took a class with an artist-in-residence from Los Angeles at his high school. By 17, he negotiated his first backstage pass as a photographer to photograph Alice Cooper live in concert. During the 10 years that followed, he photographed the hot performers on tour at that time: Rod Stewart, Hall & Oates, Grace Jones, Bette Midler, Village People, Diana Ross, Heart, Madonna, and Tina Turner. By age 18, several entertainment magazines and local publications had published his work and he started to explore entertainment writing. Over time, the celebrity business became very limiting. Though he still continues to write for Las Vegas entertainers Siegfried & Roy, Snell turned his focus to non-celebrities, photographing both male and female subjects. Location portraitures in both color and black and white are his forte now, though he does studio work as well. As sometime talent agent/scout, he consults models on their portfolios and serves as a liaison to national publications in offering publication for the shoots. His partner Derrick frequently assists on the shoots as art director. Together, they work as team to maximize the subjects' photographic potential. In the past twelve months, his work has really begun to take off. He recently began scouting and shooting models for the national fitness magazines, Exercise for Men Only, Men's Workout and Exercise & Health. As such, he is always on the lookout for new Chicago and Midwest talent with appropriate body types for those magazines. Also, a European publishing house has expressed interest in his work, and Michael is hopeful a formal deal will be made. Snell currently contributes to various local, regional and national publications and websites including Circuit Noize Magazine, Metra Magazine, Unity Toronto, ChicagoPride.com and others. "Photography is very powerful in the fact that I can freeze a moment in time. If I live to be eighty I will be able to pick up one of my photographs and go back to that moment and remember every detail of how that image came to be," said Snell. "I look at photography as a series of captured moments. Location shoots give me the freedom for interesting backgrounds and composition, which all help convey a feeling from the model. Magic imagery happens when there is chemistry, an energy, between the model and the photographer. Capturing these moments, makes an exceptional photograph." Snell's sensual collection of images showcasing his work with the male face and physique first debuted in 2002 at the Bailiwick Arts Center. His blue Men have been featured regularly at the Gentry on State Street and this website.
