Man whose research supported 'ex gay' movement says he was wrong
by GoPride.com News Staff

NEW YORK CITY -- Psychiatrist Dr. Robert Spitzer, whose research on so-called "ex-gays" gave ammunition to homophobes, now says that he was wrong.

Spitzer's 2001 study claimed that "highly motivated" homosexuals could change their sexual orientation. He know says that is not the case.

"In retrospect, I have to admit I think the critiques [of my study] are largely correct," Dr. Spitzer told the American Prospect. "The findings can be considered evidence for what those who have undergone ex-gay therapy say about it, but nothing more."

Spitzer said that he had written to the scientific journal which had published his work and offered to write a retraction, but they declined.
