Santiago to be honored by Chicago Foundation for Women
CHICAGO, IL -- Christina Santiago, a Chicago resident, Puerto Rican lesbian and community activist, is to be posthumously honored with the Chicago Foundation for Women's Impact Award.
Santiago, 29, was killed and her partner, Alisha Brennon, was severely injured Aug. 13 at the Indiana State Fair when a stage collapsed on concert-goers during a severe thunder storm.
Santiago grew up in the Bronx in New York City and received a degree in Women's Studies and Sociology from the University of New York at Albany. She came to Chicago in 2006 to work at Howard Brown Health Center (HBHC) as part of the Lesbian Community Cancer Project.
"She has been a leading and driving force in the expansion of our women's health services division and a powerful advocate for all LGBT women," HBHC CEO Jamal Edwards said last summer.
Santiago also served as the Programming Chair for Amigas Latinas, a support, education and advocacy organization for lesbian, bisexual and questioning women of Latina heritage.
Chicago Foundation for Women is a grantmaking organization dedicated to increasing resources and opportunities for women and girls in the greater Chicago area. More information on the March 16, 2012 event can be found at www.cfw.org.
