International Gay & Lesbian Travel Association convention opens in Fort Lauderdale

Fort Lauderdale, FL — The International Gay & Lesbian Travel Association (IGLTA) convenes Tuesday in Fort Lauderdale for their annual Global Convention, which focuses on LGBT tourism and includes businesses and speakers from all around the world. 

500 businesses are participating in this years event hosted by the Greater Fort Lauderdale Convention and Visitors Bureau. 

"It's going to be the Super Bowl of gay travel opportunities," Miami Beach hotelier Karen Brown told the Miami Herald, "to educate, to learn, to see how the gay travel world has evolved with new technology, politics, new laws, travel habits, financial abilities."

IGLTA began in Fort Lauderdale 28 years ago with just 25 members, today the organization has over 2,200 members in 88 countries.

According to the Herald, the convention workshops will focus on how social media has impacted the travel industry. 

The event will close on Sunday, May 15.
