Gay rights groups urging individuals to contact their state senator before vote on Tuesday

Chicago, IL — The Illinois Senate Judiciary Committee will vote tomorrow on a bill, authored by State Sen. Bill Brady (R-Bloomington) - the likely GOP gubernatorial candidate in Illinois, which would promote religious discrimination.

Brady authored Senate Bill 3447, which would amend the Illinois Human Rights Act and would open the door to employment discrimination by religious institutions, and any association or non-profit group operated in conjunction with them.

Since introducing Senate Bill 3447 immediately after the primary election in February, Brady is now trying to distance himself from the controversial legislation - even removing his name from the bill which he originally drafted.

"It is interesting that he [Brady] has tried to backpedal on this attempt to expand discrimination by passing sponsorship to Sen. Jones, just as he has tried to backpedal on his efforts to kill animals in a cruel and inhumane way," said State Rep. Greg Harris (D-Chicago). "I wonder where his true beliefs lie: his initial instincts or his reaction to the outrage of the Illinois public."

Brady has also removed his name from a bill he originally sponsored that would re-legalize mass euthanasia of dogs and cats by gas chambers.

"I am outraged at State Sen. Brady's assault on the Human Rights Act," Equality Illnois CEO Bernard Cherkasov told ChicagoPride.com. "This law has been on the books for over 5 years now, protecting Illinoisans' basic human rights, and doing so very well.  Sen. Brady wants to energize his base in anticipation of his gubernatorial run, and he is trying to do that at the expense of LGBT equality."

Equality Illinois is urging individuals to contact their state senators, especially if they are on the 11-member Judiciary Committee, which is considering the measure first.

"It is up to us as a community to stop this bill from moving anywhere," said Cherkasov. "We, at Equality Illinois, are working hard to educate legislators on the immense damage that this bill would do. But the ultimate pressure has to come from constituents.  We've posted on our website contact information for all members of the Senate Judiciary Committee and more details about this bill."

Details about SB 3447 is available at http://www.equalityillinois.org/bnews022010.html

Seriously, sporty doesn't understand the value of Equality Illinois and other organizations that fight for equal rights day after day. I guess it shows why we still need organizations like EQIL.
Why wouldn't we support EQIL's fight for our rights?!? Are you saying this site or those of us in the gay community shouldn't support EQIL -- or that we should support this legislation? I'm not sure I get your point Sporty?
Sporty72... did you read the entire article or did you just read the headline only to quickly offer this comment?

You write... "You made no attempt to get a quote from anyone other than to take EqIL quotes directly from their press release."

First, there is a quote from State Rep. Greg Harris - who is not a representative of Equality Illinois. So there is a quote from someone other than Equality Illinois. (Again, did you read the full article?)

Secondly, the quotes from EQIL CEO Bernard Cherkasov are original and not from a press release.

Additionally, we would have included quotes from Bill Brady's campaign or the Illinois Log Cabin Republicans had they responded to our requests.

Apparently the news coverage offered on ChicagoPride.com - or any other legit LGBT news organization - do not represent your opinions (as a gay man?).

Please note this story as covered by other legitimate LGBT news media.

The Windy City Times on 3/3/2010:

Anti-gay bill filed in state senate

A measure that would roll back some of the protections that the Illinois Human Rights Bill—which prohibits discrimination on the bases of sexual orientation and gender identity—currently provides has been filed in the Illinois Senate.

State Sen. Bill Brady—currently the Republican candidate for governor—originally filed the measure. However, state Sen. John O. Jones now is recognized as the chief sponsor.

Is chicagopride a legitimate news organization or just a mouthpiece for Equality Illinois? Your journalism is a joke! You made no attempt to get a quote from anyone other than to take EqIL quotes directly from their press release. If this laziness is indicative of your reporters why bother trying to disguise this as a real news article...call it what it is...an EqIL press release. While your at it...just forgo the "news" section altogether and just put up links to the sites you want everyone to read and support
