Out actor Jonathan Groff on Tuesday received a Tony Award nomination for his role as King George in the Broadway musical
Hamilton.
The smash hit broke all Tony records, receiving 16 nominations, one more than previous record holders
The Producers and
Billy Elliot.
The 30-year-old Groff was nominated in the Best Performer in a Musical category along with two
Hamilton cast mates: Christopher Jackson, who plays George Washington in the play, and Daveed Diggs, who plays Lafayette and Thomas Jefferson. Also competing in the category are Brandon Victor Dixon for his performance in
Shuffle Along and Christopher Fitzgerald for
Waitress.
Groff, who is currently filming the Netflix series
Mindhunter, left
Hamilton last month.
Groff plays a gay man looking for love in San Francisco is HBO's
Looking, which was abruptly canceled last year. The premium cable network has promised a special to conclude the series.
