Montpelier, VT — Yesterday, Republican Gov. Jim Douglas issued his veto of Vermont's same sex marriage bill.

Last week, the House voted 95-52 to approve the bill, which was just short of the two-thirds majority needed for an override. A month ago, the Senate approved the bill 26-4.

"This legislation does not address the inequalities espoused by proponents," the governor said in a prepared message.

"Regardless of whether the term marriage is applied, federal benefits will still be denied to same sex couples in Vermont," the governor continued. "And states that do not recognize same sex marriage or civil unions will also deny state rights and responsibilities" to same-sex couples.

Bill supporters have been working through the weekend to gain the support of a majority to override the veto which the Governor had promised to issue.
